Menteebot is a human-sized AI robot that you command with natural language

Engadget

The whole world is ragging on a barely functional 700 AI pin at the moment, but what if similar tech was squeezed into a gigantic robot that lives in your home? That's a worst case scenario for the recently-introduced Menteebot, a human-sized robot that's stuffed to the brim with AI-adjacent bells and whistles. It's being advertised as the "personalized AI-based robot you can mentor." It can run, walk sideways and even turn, all "with the same balance and control as a human." Manufacturer Mentee Robotics also says it'll adjust its gait when lifting heavy objects.

Amazon's Just Walk Out at Fresh stores 'relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts' - and NOT AI tech as company claimed

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Amazon's Just Walk Out technology is touted as an AI-powered checkout system at its Fresh grocery stores, but new reports have claimed it used 1,000 people in India to monitor buyers. The company is now walking out on its own the technology that promised an innovative alternative to cashiers by using cameras and sensors to scan each item and is switching to a self-checkout shopping cart called Dash Cart. An Amazon spokesperson said they do have people watching cameras at Just Walk Out locations to annotate video images, but claimed the associates aren't monitoring customers. The Information first reported that Amazon's artificial intelligence technology just meant outsourcing hundreds of jobs overseas to workers who can watch you shop in real time. Amazon has referred to Just Walk Out as'a combination of sophisticated tools and technologies that added items to the shopper's'virtual cart' when they take an item off a shelf, and remove it when they put it back.

Hillary Clinton warns AI tech will make 2016 election disinformation 'look primitive'

FOX News

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton described herself as a victim of election disinformation during a panel discussion on Thursday, and warned that the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) will make her experience "look primitive." Clinton was taking part in a Columbia University event titled, "AI's Impact on the 2024 Global Elections." She discussed her own experience in 2016 when she lost to former President Donald Trump, pointing out that the internet was populated with memes, fake content and conspiracies about her in the lead-up to Election Day. "I don't think any of us understood it. I did not understand it. I can tell you, my campaign did not understand it. Their, you know, the so-called'Dark Web' was filled with these kinds of memes and stories and videos of all sorts…portraying me in all kinds of… less than flattering ways," Clinton said.

Japan scientists create world's first mental images with AI tech

The Japan Times

Japanese scientists said they have succeeded in creating the world's first mental images of objects and landscapes from human brain activity by using artificial intelligence technology. The team of scientists from the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology, another national institute and Osaka University was able to produce rough images of a leopard, with a recognizable mouth, ears and spotted pattern, as well as objects like an airplane with red lights on its wings. The technology, dubbed "brain decoding," enables the visualization of perceptual contents based on brain activity and could be applied to the medical and welfare fields. The findings were recently published online in the international scientific journal Neural Networks. Previous studies had shown that images seen by human participants could be reconstructed from brain activity measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, although they were limited to specific domains such as alphabetical letters.

Multi-nation agreement seeks cooperation on development of 'frontier' AI tech

FOX News

Kara Frederick, tech director at the Heritage Foundation, discusses the need for regulations on artificial intelligence as lawmakers and tech titans discuss the potential risks. The U.S. and other countries signed an agreement to collaborate and communicate on "frontier" artificial intelligence (AI) that will aim to limit the risks presented by the technology in the coming years. "We encourage all relevant actors to provide context-appropriate transparency and accountability on their plans to measure, monitor and mitigate potentially harmful capabilities and the associated effects that may emerge, in particular to prevent misuse and issues of control, and the amplification of other risks," the Bletchley Declaration, signed by 28 countries, including the U.S., China and members of the European Union. The international community has wrangled with the problem of AI, trying to balance the obvious and emerging risks associated with such advanced technology against what Britain's King Charles III called the "untold benefits." The Bletchley Declaration therefore lays out two key points: "identifying AI safety risks" and "building respective risk-based policies across our countries to ensure safety in light of such risks."

Futuristic headset can 'bring the world' to homebound elderly thanks to AI tech

FOX News

MyndVR Chief Operating Officer Dave Rawlins discussed with Fox News Digital his company's goal of creating connectivity through a virtual space without trying to'outsource' care to'a machine.' A company focused on developing virtual reality (VR) therapy treatments will turn to artificial intelligence (AI) to create immersive environments that could revolutionize therapy treatment, especially for the elderly and those with mobility issues. "We want to bring the world to residents who otherwise can't experience the world," MyndVR's Chief Operating Officer Dave Rawlins told Fox News Digital. "A lot of what we do is 360 content, provide experiences and applications, modules that give a resident the opportunity to potentially get out of the four walls of the facility, whether that be in travel or Broadway shows or experiencing things that they may have experienced in their earlier life," Rawlins explained. Launched in 2016, MyndVR developed lightweight VR headsets that allow users to engage in gamified environments that help them relax and distract them from a therapy session or boost their moods by leaving their homes to do things they are unable to physically do anymore.

AI tech can crack common passwords with stunning speed, researchers find

FOX News

Fox News correspondent Madeleine Rivera has more on the rise of artificial intelligence as the federal government looks to address concerns and overcome the learning curve. Artificial intelligence tech has the ability to crack any kind of seven-character password in just six minutes, a new study has found. The research, shared by identity theft prevention company Home Security Heroes, said the same was true even if the password contains symbols. The company used a generative AI service called PassGAN to run through 15,680,000 common passwords from the Rockyou dataset to determine how long it would take to crack them. Rockyou is a data group used to train intelligent systems on password analysis.

Elon Musk, critics of 'woke' AI tech set out to create their own chatbots

FOX News

FOX Business correspondent Lydia Hu has the latest on jobs at risk as AI further develops on'America's Newsroom.' Critics who slammed OpenAI's ChatGPT system as "woke" and riddled with liberal bias are creating their own chatbots. Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk is reportedly assembling a team of artificial intelligence experts to build an alternative to ChatGPT – and other similar ideas may also be in development. The New York Times reported that the founder of Gab, a right-wing social media platform, is working on an AI software with "the ability to generate content freely without the constraints of liberal propaganda wrapped tightly around its code." OpenAI's GPT-4 is the latest deep learning model from the company that "exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks," according to the lab.

Microsoft Reportedly Made An AI That Plays Minecraft For You

#artificialintelligence

Much of the science fiction genre would have you believe that artificial intelligence would bring about humanity's downfall by rising up and slaughtering its creators, but the recent boom in AI tech has instead amounted to labor crimes like journalistic malpractice and robbing artists of their commissions. So while AI is mostly being used to make creatives obsolete, Microsoft is apparently doing internal testing on a demo that makes AI essentially play Minecraft for you. According to a report from Semafor, the demo recently showcased technology that allowed the user to simply tell Minecraft what to do, and it would move your character, collect materials, and more based on your directions.. Minecraft's open-ended nature has apparently presented somewhat of a challenge for the tech, however, as there are multiple ways to accomplish a task in Mojang's game. The example given in the report is building a car in Minecraft, which can be done in myriad ways depending on what supplies you have on-hand. So saying something broad like "build a car" would likely not get you as precise an in-game action as "build a car out of stone blocks."
